Feel Like You’re Stuck in a Rut?

If you’ve been following my “first single release” journey for my new band deadsoulrevival.com you know I’ve been examining how we recorded, mixed, and promoted our upcoming release.  You can download  Black Roses and Down for the Last Time at the link above.

I thought it would be really cool if in this post I shared with you the introduction to my course The Sound Visualization Method..  A number of people have told me this was the beginning of them making some big breakthroughs with their audio skills.

And as you may guess this philosophy has honed my skills as well.

Chapter One – A New Opportunity

Before we get started let me make a few suggestions that will help you get more from this course. Lots of courses will bombard you with information. Sometimes this is because the author felt like they needed to include a million ideas in their course. I tried my best not to do that.

I’ve included what I feel are the essential techniques that will help you to make pro recordings. I know from experience that

it’s easy to read through an entire book and not apply most of the ideas. I decided from the outset that I wanted “all killer, no filler.”

My thought, is recording doesn’t have to be overwhelming. There are lots of really powerful concepts in this course so you will get the most out of it if you stop when you learn a new technique.

Then immediately get in front of your DAW and practice.

If you don’t master the technique completely before you move on, you should make a list of the concepts you need to keep practicing until they are second nature. I suggest going through

it all at least a couple of times. After you’ve practiced these skills and revisit the material I’m sure you get even more insight into these new ideas.

If you have a good grasp of the fundamentals plus some insider secrets you will be way ahead of your peers. Most are chasing the shiny objects, i.e. every new technique under the sun. Master what I show you and you will get amazing results.

I’m going to stress some things in this course that are different than any other course on recording you’ve seen. That’s because I found that my big breakthroughs with recording didn’t have a lot to do with gear or how to use it.

Most courses focus on the car instead of learning to drive it. That stuff is certainly necessary but the real breakthroughs I made and you will soon make are all mental.

Put the biggest and best recording engineers and producers in the business in a small project studio and they will still make great records. Their experience and skill set are the key. Their thoughts and ideas make them great at what they do.

I’m sure right about now you have lots of questions. So let’s dive right in and I will clear some things up. The first goal I want you to set your sights on is certainty. By that I mean I want you to have a very clear picture in your mind of what you are looking for a song to sound like. Notice I didn’t say what an individual element sounds like, but the song as a whole. This way there will be little to no guessing about what the individual elements will be and what they should sound like.

You will have a clear picture of the drum sounds, guitar sounds, bass sounds, vocal sound, etc. in your mind.

This is what’s known as a Big Domino. This Big Domino makes all the little dominos fall down. Imagine the One Thing that would make all the other stuff not necessary.

What you are creating is a road map of actions that you will take to achieve that goal. Whenever you feel yourself being pulled away from the path with a new idea for example, take a step back and make sure you are not compromising the original goal.

The purer your vision is, the more focused sounding your

recording will be. This may be difficult at first, but keep practicing with every song you do and you will get better and better.
Especially if your band or project has a consistent style. With that in mind, let’s get into the specifics of how to make competitive,

pro recordings…
