When I first moved to Los Angeles I was looking for a studio day gig. In the meantime I was teaching guitar lessons. This actually led me to some pretty cool opportunities believe it or not. You see, the thing I learned pretty quickly is that when you are living around Hollywood you are going to get a way cooler clientele than if you were teaching out in the middle of nowhere. I taught actors and actresses, the owner of DW Drums son, and on and on. Before long Gibson was giving me guitars just for teaching some online lessons to an internet celebrity. Insane, right?

Did you know that perhaps the most fundamental way to insure you’re recording doesn’t sound like a demo is to improve your recording skills – read more here.

Pretty soon after that one of my friends in the industry suggested I start selling used gear for rock stars. The cool thing about this was it gave me an opportunity to meet up with them at studios I had only read about. It was a great networking opportunity. One of the people I helped out on numerous occasions was George Lynch, who  happens to be a great guy. One time he stopped by my house where I was building out my own project studio. I was telling him how I “needed” the latest and greatest piece of gear. What he told me I’ll never forget. He said, “Matt, you don’t need it, you want it.” Wow! Schooled by the master. That’s when I started realizing I had some priorities backwards.

This is why these days, I look at what my biggest problem is and what the solution is. For example, maybe my biggest problem is my guitar needs a setup. I’ll take care of that kind of stuff, before even thinking about what is the latest and greatest piece of tech. This same thought process goes into things like the business of your band.  Whatever is the biggest thorn in my side or is my main stumbling block gets the nod. Maybe it’s your songs don’t sound as good as they should and you should hire someone like me to mix your record (hint, hint). Contact me here.

Shiny object syndrome is real, so be on the lookout. 🙂
